Crochet Daisy Granny Square - Free Pattern!!

Updated: Aug 31, 2023

Granny squares are a firm favourite of most crocheters but sometimes it's nice to add

a bit of extra detail into your basic granny square and mix things up a bit. Whether you just want to add some different squares to a granny blanket you want to make a shoulder bag, zipper pouch, or cross-body bag (see my other blog posts for patterns!), this quick and simple daisy variation on the traditional granny square will have you addicted to making them! My crochet granny square pattern is super quick to make, too!

You can use any colour combinations for your daisy square. Don't feel like you need to stick to a white flower! Daisies actually come in lots of colours and so be adventurous and enjoy picking your yarns.

I have used aran yarn (medium, worsted weight #4) for my squares, namely Stylecraft Special Aran, but you can use any weight yarn you want, as long as it's all the same weight and with a corresponding hook. I use a 5mm hook with this yarn. You want at least 3 colours: one for the flower centre, one for the petals, and at least one more for the square. It's entirely up to you how many you choose to into your square though.

The instructions in this pattern are written in US terms. It also uses the magic circle technique. If you aren't a fan of this technique, feel free to start with a ch4 and slst join to make a circle instead.

If you prefer a video tutorial, you can watch it here!

Stitches and Techniques:

Magic circle (mc)

Single crochet (sc)

Slip Stitch (sl st)

Chain (ch)

Double crochet cluster (dc cluster)

Instructions:

Using yarn A and hook, begin with a magic circle and ch1.

Rnd1: 8 sc stitches inside the magic, join and FO

Rnd 2: Join yarn B in one of the sc stitches and ch 3.

First daisy petal: after the ch 3, you need to do a 3dc crochet cluster. Yarn over (yo), insert hook, yo, pull through, yo pull through 2 loops only. Repeat 2 more times until you have 4 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through all 4 loops. ch 2. (the chain 3 counted as a dc).

Remaining daisy petals: make a 4dc cluster in each remaining sc stitch for a total of 8 petals. yo, insert hook, yo, pull through, yo pull through 2 loops only. Repeat 3 more times until you have 5 loops on your hook. yo and pull through all 5 loops. ch 2.

!!Make sure you ch2 after each petal as this is where you’ll work into on the next round!!

Once petals are complete, join at the top of the initial ch3 and FO.

Rnd 3:Join yarn C into a ch2 space and ch 3.

Place 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc stitches in the same ch2 space

*Make 3 dc stitches in the next ch 2 space

In the next ch 2 space, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. *

Repeat steps between * and * until you get back to your initial ch3 and join to the 3rd ch.

FO if you want to change colour or slst under the top of the next 2 dc and into the corner space if you are keeping the same colour.

Repeat Rnd 3, adding a set of 3dc into the spaces between the granny clusters on each side of the square.

Fasten off and sew in ends!

I will be adding patterns on how to make your daisy square into a bag and zipper pouch soon so subscribe to get updates when they're ready.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Happy crocheting!
