Are you looking to spruce up your home decor or make a quick, simple, yet stunning gift? Then my free pattern for bobbly coasters are ideal! Speedy, easy, and a beginner friendly crochet pattern, you'll have a set of these whipped up in no time!
You can use your own choice of aran/worsted weight yarns and corresponding sized hook. I have listed mine choices here:
Scheepjes Chunky Monkey Aran Yarn in Teal and Mulberry. I used a 6mm hook with this yarn and I would recommend a 6mm hook if you use any aran/worsted weight yarn.
I also use a magic circle to start coasters but if you’re not keen on them, you chain 4 and join instead.
Colour A = main colour
Colour B = bobble colour
This pattern uses US crochet terms.
Stitches:
sc = single crochet
ch = chain
mc = magic circle
This pattern is worked in the round using continuous spirals (do not join rounds)
A full video tutorial can be found by clicking here.
With colour A, make a mc and ch1.
R1: 6sc into the mc (6)
R2: 2sc in each st around (12)
R3: (2sc in next, 1sc in next) around (18)
R4: (2sc in next, 1sc in next 2) around (24)
R5: (2sc in next, 1sc in next 3) around (30)
R6: (2sc in next, 1sc in next 4) around (36)
FO and use invisible join technique (see video for help)
Using colour B, turn your work so the back is facing you, and put a slipknot on your hook and insert hook into any st from R6. Make 1sc.
Next you will make a 4sc popcorn st to create the bobbles.
NOTE: the popcorn stitches need to be made so they come out on the other side (the right side) of your coaster.
Popcorn st: place 4sc in the next, remove the loop of the 4th st from your hook, insert your hook FROM THE BACK TO THE FRONT in the 1st of the 4 sts and pick up the loop. Pull through. The popcorn bobble should now be on the other side of the coaster.
R7: (1sc, 1 popcorn st) around.
Join with a sl st to the top of first sc of the round.
FO and sew in ends.
